What To Do In The Garden – October

Fall is here, most of us went back to our little routine. I don’t know what it is about fall that I love so much, for sure it’s all those amazing colours and scenery, but it also brings me a calming and peaceful feeling.

The flowers are slowly disappearing and it’s time to get ready for winter. To help you get ready, I am sharing with you today a list of the things that need to be done in the garden in October. But first, here are a few picture of my October garden.

What needs to be done in the garden in  October

Trees, shrubs, roses

– Verify garden stakes, trellises and supports.
-Trim creeping plants.
– Water coniferous thoroughly.
– Pick fallen fruits, leaves and mulch from the bottom of trees to prevent diseases from spreading.
– Protect fruit trees from rodent by installing protectors at the bottom of trees.
– Bring fragile fruit trees inside for the cold season.
– Apply latex paint on the trunk of trees that have a tendency to crack.

Lawn

– Reduce the frequency of grass cutting and watering.
– Remove leaves that have fallen on the lawn.

Flower beds and containers

– Bring your inside plants back in the house (treat with insecticide soap if needed).
– Remove summer bulbs that are fragile (canna, gladiolus…).
– Divide and replant perennials if needed.
– Cut down perennials if desired (I only do that in the spring since it gives my perennials an extra protection for the winter).
– Plant seeds of annuals and perennials that require cold soil to germinate.
– Plant spring bulbs.
-Install winter protection on plants and bushes as required.

Vegetable Garden

– Harvest leeks, cabbages.
– Bring herbs inside (treat with insecticide soap if needed).
– Compost all vegetable wastes.
– Protect fragile plants from frost when needed.
– Hoe the earth.
– Spread mulch on perennial vegetable plants.

As it gets colder there will be less and less to do in the garden, I think I’m ready for a little break. Are you?

Have a great month of October!

Gardening is starting all over here in Georgia. Lots of fall perennials can be planted. Love your tips, can certainly use them in a few months

Lucky you, I would have enjoyed summer for just a little bit longer.

I pretty much have my garden all ready for the cold months ahead. I do have to cut back my ornamental grasses, but want to wait until they die off more.

I’m like you on that one. I want to enjoy them as long as I can!

We noticed yesterday with the mild weather that our hostas and lilies are trying to flower again! They’re so confused!

One of my clients is busy doing all the above–it is a lot of work. However if you want a beautiful garden that is the price you pay. I love the fall–it is my absolute favorite time of the year. I love to watch the trees with the magnificent colors and when those leaves start to fall–to shuffle through them.

I’ve never really had a green thumb. My grandmother, on the other hand, kept beautiful gardens when I was growing up in Spain.

To be honest with you, when I started gardening 17 years ago, I did not have a great thumb either but I tried and I read a lot of gardening books and now I’m really proud of my gardens.
