What To Do In The Garden in March

Gardening is one of my passions, and at this time of year, I am really eager for the snow to melt and for the first flowers to come out. My tulips, daffodils and my spring perennials.Working in the garden is a great way to be close to nature and enjoy the outside.  Even if gardening can sometimes be hard work, I still find it very relaxing and mostly very rewarding.  When those flowers grow and my gardens come together, it gives me great satisfaction. My kids also enjoy working in the garden with me, mostly to plant annuals, do some weeding or pick tomatoes, raspberries and blackberries.  This year, we have decided to try making a vegetable garden so they will have lots of vegetables to pick.

Now that spring is almost here, it’s time to start planning what needs to be done in the garden.

Here is what you can do in the garden in March.

• Clean and sharpened your gardening tools.
• Clean & organise gardening shed or garage (depending on where you store your gardening tools and accessories).
• At the end of the month, you can divide summer bulbs (dahlias, canna, begonia, gladiolus…)  and plant them in pots.
• Start your seedlings.  For info on how to www.organicgardening.com/seeds.
• Mid March, for region 5-4-3-2-1, you can start pruning your fruit trees (apple, pear…), and trim shrubs that bloom in the summer and hedges if needed.  To find your zone: US and Canada https://www.almanac.com/content/plant-hardiness-zones.
• At the end of the month, prune your grape vines.
• Remove winter protection as soon as the snow melts.
• Broom little rocks from grass.
• Replace rocks from low walls.
• Clean borders, flowerbeds removing leaves, dead annual plants.  Prune perennials (if not done in the Fall).  I always prune mine in the spring, it gives my perennials extra protection in the winter.  Cut back ornamental grasses.
